Who knows how to animate?

Tue Apr 14, 2009, 9:16 PM
  • Listening to: my computer's fan
  • Reading: the words I just typed
  • Watching: my computer screen
  • Playing: now this is just stupid
After a long discussion over developing a solid animation process I was forced to come to the unfortunate conclusion that I'm going to have to do more drawing directly in Flash.

"Unfortunate?" you ask.

Well let me explain.

Because drawing in flash sucks.

I've tried it..it wasn't made for illustrators, it was made for casual animators. So there are 2 problems here.

1.) I'm not an animator (yet)
2.) Flash wasn't built for serious animation

So the obvious solution is to become an animator and get a better animation program right? Well there are problems there as well. If I get a new animation program, like toonboom for example, then I'm going to have to learn all the little things about the program and I don't really have time for that and transitioning from being an illustrator to being an animator isn't something that happens over night either.

I am confident that eventually I'll make all the necessary brakthroughs to do quick and good animations but I just don't want to take forever doing it. Which leads me to the point of this Journal entry (ahaa! got you, you thought this was a meaningless blog entry.)

Has anyone here used Toonboom and is the learning curve pretty big with that coming from flash? And secondly does anyone have any broader suggestions for thinking more like an animator?

thanks

I would love to hear what you think. Peace bro. Hope you are doing well.
I checked it out, I like the jogging animation. It just kept getting better. Your drawing seems like it improved somewhat, you should post more though.

    talk to you later brotha.
Yo buddy, it's been a while.
It took me some time to find your account on here; it seems neither of us uses AIM anymore. Also, it's somewhat surprising how the nature of your art has changed - I remember you to be a philosophical advent, rather than an ideological commentator. Although, your art is still excellent and I hope my terrible relationship advice has not ruined your life yet.

This account is not my own; I am borrowing it for the moment. I do hope you see this message, however - perhaps you can even guess who it is from.
I think I know who this is
Nice drawings! Thanks for the watch, man.

    CHANCE!

Hey man, Ryan convinced me to get one of these accounts. I wanted to say whats up and see how things are going. I know that sounds generic as hell but I haven't talked to you in forever, and I want to know whats shakin.

    yeah...

    peace
    Tim!

I'm not really sure how to answer that question. I could get in an hour long disscusion about everything I'm thinking about but these little chat boxes on websites like this make it difficult to actually talk about anything serious. In a way we're forced to be generic just because of the fake platform we're trying to communicate in.

I looked at your stuff though, you seem like your getting better.

Tell Ryan I said hi, and that he should look into Johanes Kepler's 'Harmony of the World' if he wants to understand harmonics, music and how much that has to do with the solar system, I think he'd like that.
Well, I would like to talk at a at length some time.

got an e-mail I could hit up sometime?

I have a few phone numbers all labeled Chance in my phone but I think most of them don't work. TJ tells me when you get a new one but it always seems to be one behind heh.

anyways, I will lets ryan know about that book.

    peace
